About the Event

Join us for the next six Tuesday evenings for our Camp Yampire "Be the Change" sessions!

Let's be the change we wish to see in the world, campers.

For Week 4, we are discussing how best to combat disabilities discrimination (ableism), sharing and collaborating on resources, and having an honest and empathetic conversation. We will also be viewing the movie, "Lives Worth Living" which is rated PG.

Please note: the purpose of these sessions are not to provide a venue for "debate" to the existence/severity of the issue, but rather to encourage thoughful conversation, sharing, affirmations of worth for those affected, and contructive strategies and collaboration on how to be an effective ally against ableism.

Camp Yampire's rules are as follows:

  • We are inclusive.
  • We are respectful.
  • We are friendly.
  • We spread kindness.
  • We are judgement-free.
  • We are inter sectional.

We want our zoom space to feel safe for you to share and learn about ableism. Failure to adhere to the rules above will result in your prompt dismissal from the zoom room, and possible banning from future Camp Yampire events. When in doubt, be kind.

In fact, all campers present will be required to fill out a google form sharing what they would like to get out of participating before we will allow them access to video and audio - all campers attending should be of the unified mindset that not only does discrimination against individuals with disabilities exist, but it an ongoing battle for representation, accessibility, and rights. Campers attending this session understand that the best way to challenge these structures are to work together, speak out against injustice when we see it, and spread love - not hate.

"Understanding that power and those policies, though, can be a long process, especially for those who haven’t suffered directly, or even have benefited, as a result of them. One way to begin is by watching great films. Images and the stories they tell shape our imaginations in powerful ways, and cinema can be a force for rewiring how viewers see the world off-screen, too." - Alissa Wilkinson, VOX.

At 8pm, we will take some time to get to know one another. We will begin our movie at 8:30pm, then take an hour to discuss our thoughts, share our hearts, and discuss actionable methods to be an effective ally against ableism in our own lives & in our communities.

We are here for you, spreading love and light with you. Lets be the change, together.
